So Jack Vettriano, the painter loved by the masses and loathed by the critics, has died. If you don't know who he was, google "The Singing Butler" and realise that actually, yes, you do know who he was. His images are inescapable. He was a lightening rod for the tension between "high" and "low" art. If you don't think he had any relevance or influence just look at this image from this week's oscars ceremony. It could have been made by Vettriano himself. When I first saw it, after reading about his passing, I thought it was.

That's a good spot. The arrangement of figures, the sense of movement. He was popular in Hollywood and is collected by big Hollywood names such as Jack Nicholson. His paintings are quite filmic and probably inspired by noir-thriller-romances.

I saw him give a platform talk in Glasgow about ten years ago in which he introduced a screening of David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet', which he said was one of his favourite movies, and which had inspired him.
